EXCUTIVE BOARD MEETING NOVEMBER 20, 2018

MEMBERSHIP
• We are 79% of our goal.  To reach our goal we need 44 a combination of renewals and new members.  Copies of the forms to earn the Department Commanders Pin and The National Commanders Pins are the tables. 
PAST BUSINESS
• All of the 2018 Veterans Day Programs were successful.  (1) We held two programs for The Willows.  The following members attended the Willows Programs:  Dick Meyers, Sam Gillespie, Phil Prevatte, Paul Smith, Larry Hamby, Jim Ruud, Harry Biles, Bones Wilson (2) Veterans Day at Robinson Memorial Gardens and Sam’s Wholesale:  The following members attended: Dick Meyers, Paul Thomas, Gary Neubaum, Harry Biles, Bones Wilson, Kent Dykes, Harry Biles, Sam Gillespie, Paul Smith, Tom Williamson, Larry Hamby, and Bones Wilson
• Bones Wilson, Gleen Hinkel, Cindy and Walt Carter attended the Veterans Day Parade in Liberty on Veterans Day
• Paul Smith, Harold Corn, Dan Evans, and Phil Prevatte visited Crosswell Elementary School and  shared their individual military experiences with the 1st through the 5th grade classes.  To close the program we were paraded through the school halls where we were greeted by the students cheering and clapping as we walked by.
• On November 16 Bones Wilson, Sam Gillespie, Tom Williamson and Auxiliary President PJ Williamson returned to The Willows and gave a program on how to fold the American Flag and the meaning of each fold.
• So far this year we have donated to the following National and Local Charities using funds collected during the Poppy Sale and Belk Charity Day Sales
(1) Pickens County Meals on Wheels - $2500
(2) Pickens County Salvation Army $1000
(3) United Christian Ministries $500 cash and quarterly donation of food
(4) Operation Comfort Warriors $500
(5) Temporary Financial Assistance $500
(6) The Family Support System $500
(7) National Emergency Fund $2000  ($1000 to hurricane Florence and $1000 to Hurricane Michael
FUTURE BUSINESS:
• The Christmas Party December 4, 2018 6:30 pm at Smithfield’s Country Club.  Please sign the form on the front table if you plan to attend. 
• Wreaths Across America December 15, 2018 10:00 am at Robinson Memorial Gardens
• We will try something new starting January 12, 2019.  From 9 am to 11 am we will meet at the post for coffee and donuts.  The veterans get together is open to all veterans whether they are Legion members or not.
• The Ladies Auxiliary will meet the third Saturday every month at 9:30 am.
• Attached to the order of business tonight are two drawings of the suggested American Legion Sign and their prices.  We need to move on this so it can be dedicated next March the Legion 100th birthday.
• I suggest we have pizza at the next meeting.
• The Rifle Raffle tickets will be picked up this week.  They will be ready for sale at the meeting next week.
OTHER BUSINESS:
• Operation Dragonfly – Post 52 has supported the project when we purchased a Gold Level Paver.  If you want your name engraved in eternity, you can purchase a brick with your name, rank, and branch of service for $100. 
• The South Carolina legislature has presented a bill to support free tuition for Veterans Caretakers.  Presently the veteran and their children can take advantage of this program.  The American Legion Department of SC supports this bill and ask that every member contact their local Representative and Senator to pass this bill.
• Copies of the form to submit for the Department and National pins when you sign a new member to the legion are available and on the table.  One new member for the Department pin and 3 new members for the National pin
• Paul Hamilton has donated the golf cart to the Post.
• Does anyone have any additional business for the good of the Post?
• Ask Senator Rex Rice and Representative Neal Collins to support the bill that gives free tuition to disabled veteran caretakers.

MEMBERSHIP:
• 138 of the 207 members have joined, transferred, or renewed (67%).  There will be a Membership Workshop at Post 14 in Anderson Saturday October 20, 2018 at 10 am.
BUSINESS:
• District 13 will meet at Post 151, 357 Garvin Rd, Norris SC at 10 am.  Coffee and Doughnuts will be served.
• There will another Belk Charity Day event on Saturday November 3, 2018.  Coupon Sales are planned for Thursday October 25, 11am to 2 pm at Belk, Saturday Oct 29, 11 am to 2 pm at Belk, Tuesday October 30, 2018 11am to 2 pm at Belk, and Friday November 2, 11 am to 2 pm at Belk.  Contact Sam Gillespie at 678-643-1643 for further information.
• Veterans Day weekend will be busy.  On Friday at 2 pm we will have a ceremony at the Willows of Easley, 105 Willow Place, Easley, 29640,  on Saturday November 10, 2018 we will remember the end of WWI, Sam’s at 2 pm, and we are invited to a BBQue Supper at Golden Creek Baptist Church, Liberty, SC: Sunday November 11, we have been invited to be a part of the veterans Parade in Liberty at 2 pm and attend a Veterans Day ceremony at the Pickens County Performing Arts Center at 4:30 pm.  Please contact Sherry Harris at 864-898-5243 if you plan to attend the Liberty events. November 12, we are invited to go to Croswell Elementary School at 7:30 am, greet the students as they arrive for school, eat breakfast, and speak to the students.  Pickens High School has invited Post 52 members to attend a special Veterans Day Presentation at Pickens High School Football Stadium at 10:30 am. 
• We collected more than $6,000 the Memorial Day weekend Poppy Sales and the Belk Charity Day Coupon sales.  The funds collected from Poppy Sales have to be designated for Veterans.  We donated Locally to $1500 to Meals on Wheels for Veterans, $500 to Salvation Army for Veterans, %500 United Christian Ministries for Veterans, and Nationally to the American Legion National Emergency Fund $1000, Operation Comfort Warmth $500, Temporary Financial Assistance $500, and The Family Support Program $500.  An additional $1000 was designated for the National Emergency Fund to aid veteran victims of Hurricane Michael.
• The Wreaths Across America program is underway and we have had a great response from our members.  We will take donation until December 1, 2018.  The wreaths will be placed on more than 300 Veteran Graves in Robinson Memorial Gardens. 
• The Christmas Party will be December 4, 2018 at Smithfield’s Country Club.  The cost per meal is $22.50 per person.  The bar is open for those who wish to participate.
• The Fall Festival rendered $95.  Sam Gillespie manned the booth
• Don’t forget about the quarterly Food Drive.
• Don’t forget about the Honor Guard.
• The Rifle Raffle will begin in mid-November.  We will have 210 Raffle Tickets to sell and will be able to keep $10 for every ticket sold for Post 52.

  • 200 OF THE NEEDED 300 WREATHS HAVE BEEN ORDERED WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DECEMBER 15, 2018 AT 10 AM IN ROBINSON MEMORIAL GARDENS

  • GUN RAFFLE REMINDER – THE TICKET SALE WILL START NOVEMBER 17, 2018, TICKETS WILL BE DRAWN STARTING THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY 2019 AND WILL BE DRAWN UNTIL THE LAST WEEK OF JUNE 2020

  • POST 52 DONATED $1500 TO MEALS ON WHEELS TO HELP FUND THE COST OF FEEDING VETERANS ON THE DAILY ROUTE. THE FUNDS WERE COLLECTED DURING THE BELK CHARITY DAY SALE. MEALS ON WHEELS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO DELIVER THE MEALS.

  • THE CHRISTMAS PARTY IS SCHEDULED AT SMITHFIELDS DECEMBER 4, 2018 AT 6:30 PM.THE MENU WILL BE FRIED CHICKEN, ROAST BEEF, GREEN BEANS, MASHED POTATOES AND GRAVY, BANANA PUDDING AND PEACH COBBLER

  • THE VETERANS DAY SPEAKER WILL BE RETIRED ARMY JAMES STEWART. JAMES IS THE CHAPLAIN FOR THE NATIONAL PURPLE HEART ASSOCIATION. WE WILL BE RECOGNIZING ALL PURPLE HEART RECIPIENTS

  • POST 52 HAS BEEN INVITED TO ATTEND, MARCH, OR RIDE IN THE VETEANS DAY PARADE IN LIBERTY NOVEMBER 11, 2018 AT 2 PM.IF YOU HAVE A FLATBED WILL YOU VOLUNTEER YOUR FLATBED TO ALLOW THE MEMBERS TO RIDE ON.

  • THE FALL CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD THIS WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 28, 29, AND 30 AT THE MARRIOTT DOWNTOWN, COLUMBIA SC. EVERYONE IS INVITED TO ATTEND.

  • WE WILL BE ASKING FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR VETERAN DAY USHERS NOVEMBER 10, 11 AM, 2018 AT ROBINSON MEMBORIAL GARDENS

  • THE MEMBERSHIP WORKSHOP THAT WAS SCHEDULED SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR SOMETIME IN OCTOBER.

  • WE SHOULD DESIGNATE AN AMOUNT TO DONATE TO CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES AND THE SALVATION ARMY FOR CHRISTMAS. THE EXECUTIVE BOARD AGREED TO $500.00 EACH

  • EVERY YEAR WE HAVE DONATED TO THE FOLLOWING AMERICAN LEGION NATIONAL FUNDS TO ASSIST VETERANS.THEY ARE:

    (1) THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY FUND, $1,000 – VOTED ON BY THE EXECUTIVE BOARD

    (2) OPERATION COMFORT WARRIORS, $500.00

    (3) TEMPORARY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, $500.00

  • (4) THE FAMILY SUPPORT NETWORK. $500.00

  • THE QUESTION IS HOW MUCH SHOULD WE DONATE TO EACH PROGRAM.WHEN WE SELL POPPY’S, WE AGREE TO ASSIST VETERANS.THIS YEAR WE COLLECTED $5500 FROM POPPY SALES AND ACCORDING TO THE RULES OF SELLING POPPIES WE AGREE TO DONATE $5500 TO VETERANS.SO FAR WE HAVE DONATED $1500 TO PICKENS COUNTY MEALS ON WHEELS AND DESIGNATED THE FUNDS BE USED TO HELP FEED VETERANS ON THE DAILY ROUTES.
