                                               April 2013 Newsletter

 

1.  The April 2013 monthly meeting was called to order on 23 Apr 2013,
by Post 52 Commander, Carl Layman

2.  Opening prayer given by Chaplain, Bob Helms.

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the March 2013 meeting.

4.  21 members were present at the meeting.

5.  Flags will be placed on the West View Cemetery Veterans Graves
in Easley, SC on Friday, 24 May 2013 at 8:00AM. All personnel wishing
to help be at the cemetery at 8:00AM. Flags will be taken up Tuesday,
28 May 2013 at 8:00AM. The cemetery is located across the street from
the Easley Police Department.

6. Buddy Poppy Sales will be sold on 24, 25, and 27 May 2013 at the
Wal Mart, Easley, SC from 9:00AM to 6:00PM. Sign up sheet for members
wanting to participate is on the table in the rear of the room.

7. Boys State. Our Post is sending 9 boys to Boys State at Anderson
University on 9-15 Jun 2013. 7 from Easley High School, 1 Mauldin
High School, and 1 Home Schooled will attend.

8. Tickets are available for the Pancake Breakfast at Applebees on
1 Jun 2013 from 7:30AM to 10:30AM. Tickets are $5.00 and if you
want some to sell to your friends, neighbors, etc. please see Paul
Smith for tickets. Monies will be for support of Post 52 sponsored
baseball team.

9. Easley High School ROTC awards ceremony will be on 9 May 2013.
Carl Layman and Richard Meyers will attend the awards ceremony.

10. Boys State and Girls State and Citizenship Awards ceremony
will be held at Easley High School on 17 May 2013 at 9:30AM.
Carl Layman and Paul Smith will attend.

11. Breakfast at IHOP's, Easley, SC, Tuesday, 30 Apr 2013 at
7:30AM. All are welcome to attend.

12.  Tom Williamson of the Easley Sheriff's Department gave an
excellent briefing on Gun Control.  South Carolina has a 20 page
gun law on the internet at www.sled.sc.gov/SCStateGunLaws1.aspx

13.  District 13 American Legion Meeting at 6:30PM, 29 April 2013
at Anderson Post 14, Greenville Street in Anderson.  Paul Smith,
Arthur Johns, Richard Meyers, Jay Smith, Jim Ruud, and Richard
Dillon will attend.  Please meet at the Post 52 Building at 5:30PM
and all will leave from there to go to the meeting.

14. Air Force, Army, Marine, Navy times available on table in rear
for all members.

                                            March 2013 Newsletter

 

1.  The March 2013 monthly members meeting was called to order on 26 Mar 2013
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer was given by Chaplain, Bob Helms.

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the February 2013 meeting.

4.  17 members were present at the meeting.  1 guest, Deputy Fricks  from the Pickens
county Sheriff's Dept was also present with his K-9 dog.

5.  Flags will be placed on the West View Cemetery Veterans Graves in Easley, SC on
Friday, 24 May, 2013 at 8:00AM for Memorial Day.  All personnel wishing to help be at
the cemetery 
at 8:00AM.  Flags will be taken up, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 at 8:00AM.

6.  Buddy Poppy Sales will be sold on 24, 25, and 27 May 2013 at the Wal Mart's, Easley,
SC. from 9:00AM to 6:00PM.  Sign up sheet for members wanting to participate is on
the table in the rear of the room.

7.  Pancake breakfast at IHOP's in Easley for members, Tuesday, 2 Apr 2013 at 7:30.
All members are encouraged to attend.

8.  Election of Post 52 Officers.  Nomination of Officers at the April 2013 meeting.
New officers needed are 3rd Vice and Historian.  Election of officers will be at the
May meeting and swearing in of the officers will be at the June meeting.

9.  Need someone to be in charge of concession stand and also back-up for game
announcer at the baseball field.  Please let Dick Meyers, Cell: 864 283-4422 know if
you would like to participate in one of the positions.

10.  Pancake Breakfast at Applebees in Easley, 1 Jun 2013, Saturday, 7:30AM.  All
members are invited.  Tickets, $5.00 per member.

11.  Master Deputy Fricks, K9 representative from Pickens County was present at the
meeting with his K9 dog (DAX).  Deputy Fricks gave a briefing on the K-9 dogs duties
and responsibilities (detecting narcotics, criminal apprehension, tracking purposes,
finding lost children and tracking criminals.  It was an outstanding presentation.

February 2013 Newsletter

1.  The February 2013 monthly members meeting was called to order on 26 Jan 2013,
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer was given by Chaplain, Bob Helms.

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the January 2012 meeting.

4.  18 members were present at the meeting.  Four new members were present at the meeting:
Jim Hawk (US Navy Retired), Tom Crowe (US Air Force), Ralph Bucknere (USMC), and Bob
Sampson (US Army Retired)

5.  The Buddy Poppy Sale will be at the Easley Wal Mart on 24, 25, and 27 May 2013.  Bob Helms
made 2 signs to use at the Poppy Sale.

6.  U.S. Flags will be placed on the Veterans Graves at West View Cemetery, Easley, SC on 
Friday, 24 May 2013.  All members wanting to help be at the Cemetery at 8:00AM.

7.  Letters to all members requesting funds for our Baseball Program was sent a few weeks ago.
Funds are being received a a very good basis.

8.  There will be a breakfast at IHOP's in Easley, SC for all members at 7:30AM, 5 Mar 2013.

9.  Mike Arblaster, Boy Scout Troop 37, Easley, SC gave a briefing and asked our Post to help
burn the U.S. Flags that are placed in a barrell at the Easley City Hall.  Post 52 agreed to pick
them up at City Hall and do destruction of the U.S. Flags.

                                               January 2013 Newsletter

1.  The January 2013 monthly members meeting was called to order on 22 Jan 2013,
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer was given by Chaplain, Bob Helms

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the November 2012 meeting.

4.  15 members were present at the meeting.

5.  Post 52 membership is 128.

6.  Jim Ruud will order Buddy Poppies for our Buddy Boppy sale at Wal-Marts, Easley, SC
on 24, 25, 27 May 2013.  We already have Wal-Mart approval.  Anyone wishing to help,
please contact Carl Layman or Jim Ruud.

7.  New member Gary Fraley present at the meeting.  Gary went into military in 1964 and
served in Viet Nam in 1967-1968.  Got out of service in 1968 as Sgt Major.  He also served
in the National Guard.  He was administrator for Shriners Hospital while in the National
Guard.

8.  Richard Dillon was appointed by Carl Layman to see if our Post can create an Honor Guard.
Anyone wishing to participate please contact Richard Dillon.

9.  Jimmy Wilson, member, gave briefing on the meaning and importance of the U.S. Flag.
A flag was folded by Post 52 members.

10.  A breakfast for our members will be held at IHOP's, Tuesday, 29 Jan 2013 at 7:30AM. 
All members are encouraged to attend.

11.  Dick Meyers (Athletic Director) presented Certificate of Appreciation of Outstanding
Service and Assistance as part of our Post 52 who sponsors a baseball team.

12.  Baseball:  Letters will be sent to all local businesses for funds to support the baseball
team for 2013.  Vince Anderson will be our coach again for 2013.

13.  AF, Army, Navy, and Marine Times available for members to pick-up on desk in back.

November 2012 Newsletter

1.  The November 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 27 Oct 2012,

4.  14 members were present at the meeting.

5.  Post 52 membership is 122.

6.  Our Christmas Party will be 4 Dec 2012, 6:30PM at the Golden Corral, Easley, SC
Familites invited.  A sign-up sheet is available at back of room to sign-up for the Christmas
Party.

7.  Robinson Memorial Garden Veterans Day Celebration.  Photos of the Celebration are
located on our Web Site (www.americanlegionpost52easleysc.org).  The photos are in
the category "Photo Gallery" and under the title "VetsCele-RobMemGdns-12Nov2012).

8.  There is a District Meeting, Saturday, 1 Dec 2012 at Seneca, SC.  Members wishing to
attend, be at the Post 52 Building at 9:10 if you wish to attend the meeting.  We will leave
from there.

9.  Air Force, Army, and Navy Times are on the back table for all to pick up if they want
a copy.

10.  A letter will be sent to all members describing some of the history of Post 52.  Included
with the letter is a magnate of the 2013 Member Monthly Meeting dates, an application for
veterans to ask their veteran friends to join the Post, a card with our Post 52 address and
our web site address.

11.  There will be no Board of Directors Meeting and Member's Meeting for the month of
December.  Our next meeting will be in January 2013.  Board of Director's Meeting will
be on 15 Jan 2013 at 7:00PM and the Member's Meeting will be on 22 Jan 2013 at 7:30PM.

October 2012 Newsletter

1.  The October 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 23 Oct 2012,
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the September 2012 meeting.

4.  Present members of Post 52 is 105.

5.  15 members were present at the meeting.

6.  A disabled veteran called Jim Ruud our Adjutant and he said he needed money to help
him with food.  All present voted Yes to help him.  Jim Ruud will contact the Veteran.

7.  Our Christmas Party will be 4 Dec 2012, 6:30 PM at the Golden Corral.  Families invited.
A sign-up sheet is available at back of room to sign-up for the Christmas Party.

8.  Our Veterans Day Celebration will be at Robinson Memorial Garden in Powdersville on
12 Nov 2012 at 11:00AM.  All coming should be there at 10:30AM.  The celebration will be
at the main flagpole.

9.  U.S. flags will be placed on Veterans Gravesites on Friday, 9 Nov 2012 at the Gravesite
in uptown Easley, SC.  This is the gravesite beside the Easley Sheriff's Department.  Personnel
wishing to help be there no later than 8:00AM. 

10.  Dick Meyers, a member, gave a briefing on what each phrase of "The Pledge of Allegiance"
means.

September 2012 Newsletter

1.  The September 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 25 Sep 2012,
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer was given by Chaplain, Bob Helms.

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the August 2012 meeting.

4.  Present members of Post 52 is 101.

5.  Boys State members for 2012 attended this meeting.  Each Boys State member for
2012 gave a briefing on their Boys State Trip and what Boy State meant to them.

6.  MSgt Martha K. Dorset, USAF Ret, Pickens County Veterans Affairs Officer attended our
meeting and gave a briefing on what VA offers and benefits.  Handouts on VA Health Care,
Greenville, SC Vet Center, Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home, A Summary of VA
Benefits, Helping Homeless Veterans, Directory of Services Available to Veterans in South
Carolina, and the M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery were available for all Veterans.  If

August 2012 Newsletter

 1.  The August 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 28 August 2012,
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander

2.   Opening prayer was given by Chaplain, Bob Helms.

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the July 2012 meeting.

4.  18 members were present at the meeting.

5.  Breakfast meeting at Jimmy's Restaurant went well.  A lot of good ideas were put forth
at the meeting on conducting activities within the Post.

6.  Recruiting for next years baseball team needs to start 1 Jan 2013.  Also if you know any
business who would like to support our team, please contact Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander
or Richard Meyers, Post Athletic Director.

7.  Boy's State, Girls's State personnel will attend 25 Sep 2012 monthly meeting.

8.  4 Dec 2012, 6:30PM will be our annual Christmas Party at Golden Corral.   All members
and wives are encouraged to attend.

9.  We are thinking about having a Family Ticket (Seasonal Tickets) made for the baseball
season next year.  Price of tickets will be forthcoming.

10.  Monday, November 12, 2012 will be our Veterans Day Celebration at Robinson Memorial
Gardens, in Easley, SC.   All are welcome to attend.

11.  American Legion Post 11 in Pickens and the US MTM Club invite all members of all Fire
Departments, EMS, Police Departments, Search and Rescue teams and all branches of the 
U.S. Military to participate in a 9/11 Remembrance, Tuesday, September 11th at Legacy
Square in Pickens, SC.  Activities begin at 3:00 PM with a static display of US Military, Police
Dept, Fire Dept, EMS, and Search and Rescue Vehicles.  Hot dog plate dinners will be for
sale to raise funds for EMS, Police Dept, Fire Dept, and the Wounded Warrior Project.  At
6:00 PM a color guard from the US Marine Corp will present the colors.  Activities will
conclude around 7:00PM.   Any questions contact US.MTMclub@yahoo.com.

12.  There will be no official December 2012 Board of Directors meeting or members monthly
meeting.  Our Christmas party at Golden Corral will serve as our monthly meeting.

July 2012 Newsletter

1.  The July 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 24 July 2012, 7:30PM by
Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer was given by Chaplain Bob Helms.

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the June 2012 meeting.

4.  12 members present at the meeting.

5.  On the 4th of August 2012, our post is going to have a meeting at Jimmy's Restaurant in Easley,
SC at 7:30AM to discuss topics for the upcoming year, i.e., baseball program, buddy poppies
program, etc.  All members are encouraged to attend.

6.  As of 25 Jul 2012 we have 66 members assigned to our post.  All members are encouraged to
pay annual dues and become a member of our Post and attend our monthly meetings.

7.  The Army, Navy, and Air Force Times is available on the information table for all members.

8.  We have a new transfer into our post present at the meeting.  George Covington, a Viet Nam
Veteran and he has worked 20 plues years for Michelin.

9.  Our Post is going to have a celebration of our baseball team members and volunteers at
Mutt's Barbecue, Easley, SC on 6 Aug 2012 starting at 5:30PM.    All members are encouraged
to attend.  All baseball players will be honored with Certificates of Appreciation and volunteers
will also be given certificate of appreciation for their help during the season.

June 2012 Newsletter

1.  The June 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 26 June 2012, 7:30PM by
Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer was given by Chaplain Bob Helms.

3.  Adjutant Jim Ruud read the minutes of the May 2012 meeting.

4.  13 members present at the meeting.  Total Post 52 membership is 134.

5.  $2,560.00 was made during our Buddy Poppy Sales.  We commend all who worked at Wal Marts, Easley, SC.

6.  Carl Layma, Post Commander wishes to have a meeting of all Post Members, especially Poppy Sales
participants and Baseball Member participants at Jimmy's restaurant in Easley, SC on Saturday, 4 Aug 2012.

7.  A new member Mr. Alexander was present at the meeting.

8.  The miniature Vietnam Wall is on display in Greenville thru 30 Jun 2012.  All are welcome to visit the display.

9.  Carlton Patterson, District 13 Commander, swore in new Post 52 officers for the new year.

10.  Our Post 52 Baseball Team has a 10-4 record.  Our team will be in the playoffs.

May 2012 Newsletter

1.  The May 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 22 May 2012, 7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2. Opening prayer was given by Chaplain Bob Helms.

3. Adjutant Ruud read the minutes of the April, 2012 meeting.

4. Jim Ruud read a letter from Boys State, Palmetto regarding American Legion night reception planned for 10 June at Anderson University. RSVP to Jim by 01 June at his cell 354-6899.

5. Election of Post officers the new year took place. All current officers were re-elected for one more. Paul Smith will work with Jim Ruud to take over the office of Adjutant at the end of Jim's last term next year.

6. Dick Meyers gave a report on Baseball. He made a request for volunteers to work the concessions stand and gate on game nights. Th game schedule is posted on this site.

7. Commander Layman read a pome Flanders Fields.

8. Member Bones Wilson spoke on the subject of Memorial Day.

9. Flags will be placed on Veterans graves at the Easley Cemetary Friday, 5/25/12 at 8AM.

10. Buddy Poppies will be sold at the Easley Walmart May 25,26 &28 , 2012.

11. A Fund raiser is scheduled for Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Mutt's  Barbeque, Easley from 5:00PM- 8:00PM.

April 2012 Newsletter

1.  The April 2012 monthly members meeting was called to order on 24 Apr 2012, 7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer given by Chaplain Bob Helms.

3.  Richard Meyers passed out a copy of the American Legion Post 52 baseball
schedule to all members present.  The schedule is also listed on our web site
under the category "Baseball".  The yearly registration and insurance for
the baseball team has been completed for the year.

3.  Poppy sale program will be held at the Wal-Mart in Easley on Fri, 25 May,
Sat, 26 May, and Mon, 28 May.  Need volunteers.  A sign up sheet is provided
in the room.  If anyone else would like to participate please contact either
Carl Layman, Post Commander or Jim Ruud, Post Adjutant.

4.  Flags will be placed on Veterans gravesites at the cemetery beside the
Easley Sheriff's Dept, downtown Easley at 0800 hours, Friday, 25 May.  Anyone
wishing to help, please show up at the cemetery at 0800 hours on Friday,
25 May.  The flags will be taken down on Tuesday, 29 May at 0800 hours.

5.  Nominations for post officers.  All agreed to keep the present officers.  If
any new nominations please report at the May monthly meeting.  This is the
last year for Jim Ruud as Adjutant.  He requested that a volunteer help him
this year to get acquainted with the position.  Paul Smith volunteered to help
him this year.

6.  District Meeting will be held on 28 Apr at the Williamston, SC Post.  Carl
Layman and Jim Ruud will attend.

7.  ROTC awards will be given at Easley HS on Thursday, 17 May 2012 at
6:30PM.  Carl Layman and Richard Dillon will attend.

March 2012 Newsletter

1.  The March 2012 monthly meeting was called to order on 27 Mar 2012,
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer given by Chaplain Bob Helms.

3.  21 Post 52 members present at meeting.  There are 132 total members in
Post 52.

4.  Ray Eade new member, Prior Service, US Army and Civil Service Retiree
was present at the meeting.  He was previously a member of the American
Legion in Virginia.

5.  Poppy Sales, May 2012 sign up sheet available for members wanting to help.
Anyone wanting to help, please sign up using the sign-up sheet.  Anyone else
wanting to help please contact Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

6.  The chairman of the Post 52 American Legion Baseball Committee is Richard
Meyers.  He gave information on teams that we will be playing.

7.  Buddy Corn, Benefit Review Company, gave briefing on Humana Insurance
for Veterans.  He passed out information on the Humana Preventive Plus
Package for Veterans, Prescriptions Program, Vision Care Program, Hearing
Care Program, Clinic Care Program and Alternative Medicine Program which is
covered under the Humana Insurance Preventive Plus Package for Veterans.
Any veteran wanting information on the program, please call Buddy Corn at

February 2012 Newsletter

1.  The February 2012 monthly meeting was called to order on 28 Feb 2012,
7:30PM by Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander.

2.  Opening prayer given by Chaplain Bob Helms.

3.  Post 52 membership is 129.

4.  Received thank you letter from Nancy Trowbridge, Gettys Middle School for
Post 52 purchasing manequins for Gettys Middle School for the purpose of
practicing CPR.

5.  Jun 1, 2, 3, 2012, the SC American Legion Annual Convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency, Greenville, SC .  Anyone wanting to go contact Jim Ruud, Post 52
Adjutant.  $25.00 Registration Fee.

6.  Baseball Committee had a meeting at Post 52 location on 1 Mar 2012 at
7:00PM.  Need help at the games taking up tickets and also help at the concession
stand.  If you wish to help, please give name and phone number to Dick Meyers,
Base Committee Chairman.

7.  Anyone having any suggestions for any business wishing to donate money
to help in the sponsorship of Post 52's baseball team, please notify Dick Meyers,
Baseball Committee Chairman.

8.  At our next meeting, Carl Layman, Post 52 Commander will have a sign up for
personnel wishing to help in the Poppy Sale at Wal Mart on the 25th, 26th, and
28th of May 2012.  Also Stan Whitten, Post 52 member needs help placing flags
at the veterans graves on 25 May 2012.

9.  Charlotte Motor Speedway will honor Vietnam Veterans on Sat, 31 Mar 2012.

5.  Jerry Leslie a member of our post and our baseball team manager passed away.

6.  Arthur Bowens is our new Athletic Director and Vince Anderson is our new
baseball coach.

7.  We need to start thinking about Memorial Day weekend, 25th, 26th, and 28th
May.  Our Poppy Drive is on those days at Wal Marts in Easley and we need volunteers.  We will have sign-up roster at our March meeting.  Flags will put on
our veterans graves at the Easley cemetery on May 25th and taken down on May 29th.  Need volunteers.

8.  Jim Wilson, a post member gave briefing on, (Do members tell anyone what they did during their time in service.)  Veterans should let their family and others know of their history and achievements while in service.  He passed out an outline for members to fill out and return to him so he can have history of service of our members.
